In implementation of the directives of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and the Crown Prince, Prime Minister, Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the medical and surgical team affiliated with the Saudi program for conjoined twins began this morning the separation operation for the Tanzanian conjoined twins (Laitiens and Lofens), who are two years and two months old, at King Abdullah Specialist Children’s Hospital in King Abdulaziz Medical City, Ministry of National Guard in Riyadh.
The General Supervisor of the King Salman Relief and Humanitarian Aid Center and Head of the Medical and Surgical Team of the program, Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Rabiah, stated in a press statement that the Tanzanian conjoined twins (Laitiens and Lofens) arrived in the Kingdom on January 27, 2026. After the twins were admitted to King Abdullah Specialist Children’s Hospital, the medical team conducted multiple precise examinations and held several specialized medical meetings to assess their condition and determine the appropriate separation plan.
He explained that the twins are conjoined at the pelvic and hip areas and have four lower limbs, as well as sharing the lower part of the intestines, the spinal column, lumbar vertebrae, and spinal cord. A skin expansion procedure was performed on them, which took several months to prepare them for the separation operation.
He noted that the operation is scheduled to take place in nine stages and will last approximately 15 hours – God willing – with the participation of 44 consultants, specialists, nursing, and technical staff in the fields of anesthesia, pediatric surgery, pediatric neurosurgery, urology, and plastic surgery, and that the success rate of the operation is 70%.
Dr. Al Rabiah pointed out that this operation is the fourth for conjoined twins from Tanzania and is number (75) within the Saudi program for conjoined twins, which has been able since 1990 to care for (160) twins from (29) countries across (5) continents.
On behalf of himself and his colleagues, members of the medical and surgical team of the Saudi program for conjoined twins, he expressed gratitude and appreciation to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and his trustworthy Crown Prince – may God protect them – for their support of the Saudi program for conjoined twins, affirming that this support has enabled the Saudi medical team to provide the best medical care capabilities and improve the quality of life for the benefiting children, asking Almighty God to crown the operation with success and grant the twins health and wellness.
