The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia celebrates the 80th anniversary of its membership in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1946, during a journey that has transitioned from membership and participation to contributing to the formulation of the organization’s policies and directions, and supporting its programs in education, science, culture, communication, and information.
The Kingdom has enhanced its presence by hosting three regional UNESCO centers for dialogue and peace, research and ethics of artificial intelligence, and quality and excellence in general education, as well as supporting international awards and initiatives, including the UNESCO Al-Fawzan Prize, in addition to training over 6,000 women in 119 countries on artificial intelligence skills.
The partnership included the accession of eight Saudi cities to the Learning Cities Network, the inclusion of Salma and North Riyadh parks in the Global Geoparks, and three Saudi reserves in the Man and the Biosphere Programme, in addition to registering eight sites on the World Heritage List and 18 elements in the intangible heritage. The Saudi Fund for UNESCO, funded with million, has contributed to implementing projects that benefited 136 countries.
The Kingdom has hosted international conferences, most notably the World Heritage Committee 2023, the Global Forum on Artificial Intelligence Ethics 2026, and is preparing to host the Water Forum 2027 and the “Mondiacult 2029” conference.
In the context of its Arab presence, the Kingdom is concluding its presidency of the Executive Council and the General Conference of the Arab Organization for Education, Culture and Science (ALECSO) during the Muscat meetings from November 9 to 12, after presiding over the council since July 2021 and the conference since May 2024.
The council will discuss the appointment of an Assistant Director-General and recommendations from five specialized committees, while the conference will review the budget and program for 2027–2028, the future vision for the organization, and plans for the development of education and cultural and creative industries.
The meetings will witness the signing of five agreements with Sudan, Syria, Lebanon, Libya, and Yemen, implementing the Kingdom’s proposal to allocate one million dollars to support them during the upcoming financial cycle, along with a memorandum of understanding for training the organization’s staff.
These efforts come as an extension of the Kingdom’s relationship with ALECSO since its establishment in 1970, which enhances the development of joint Arab work.
